Summer Kick-Off Fun Run 1996 Summary

The Fifth Annual Summer Kick-Off Fun Run was held at Clear Creek High School in League City on June 1, 1996. The big news is that a Lewis brother didn’t win. The Lewis’ absence opened the door for James Lawrence, Jr. to take top men’s honors with a 16:46 time. The first four runs were each won by Greg or Jeff Lewis.

While one dynasty ended, another may have begun as Stacy Poole was the women’s winner for the second year. Her time of 17:26 was over a minute faster than her last year’s finish.

The master’s (over 40) winners were Larry Tidwell from Pasadena and Linda Ross from Dickinson with times of 17:52 and 23:02, respectively. Eva Brown, 70, beat many younger runners and won her age group with a 31:41. Olan Langham became the first ever winner of the 80 year age category.

The field of participants increased almost 100 from last year to 556 entrants in the 5K run, Kid’s K run, and 3K walk events. All participants and guests were provided with a wide range of refreshments after the exercise.

The Summer Kick-Off Run is held in memory of James Glenn, a Clear Creek High School student and athlete who died while attending and playing football at Texas A&M in 1991. Benefits from the Summer Kick-Off Run are used to provide student scholarships through the James Glenn Memorial Fund. This year $1000 scholarships were awarded to Jacob Wood, Jennifer Sellen, and Meredith Phillips, outstanding Clear Creek High School scholar athletes.

Run sponsors are Star Toyota, St. John Sports Medicine and Rehab Center, Harrisburg Bank, Landry Chiropractic, Esteban's Cafe and Cantina, GTE, Hall's Insurance, Safari Animal Care Centers, SR Signs, and Sam and Susan Juliano.
