Summer Kick-Off Fun Run 1998 Summary

The Seventh Annual Summer Kick-Off Fun Run was held at Clear Creek High School in League City on May 30, 1998. It comes as no surprise that Jeffrey Lewis won the overall men's 5K again this year. He has now won five times in the seven year history of the race (and his twin brother won one of those two years). The bad news for competitors it that he's getting better. This year's 15:51 was a Kick-Off Run record and 48 seconds faster than last year. Shoshana Ziblatt, a recent transplant to Texas from a cooler climate, didn't let the warmth and humidity stand between her and the women's first place trophy with a 19:28 time. Jeffrey and Shoshana were on the winning mixed relay team at the Al Lawrence Relays recently.

Sheron Kaye Rohmfeld, who often watches her children pick up running awards, has been picking up a few herself including the women's masters with a 22:35. William Martin set a Kick-Off Run masters record with his 16:23 which would have been good enough for the overall trophy last year.

James Lawrence, Jr. was second overall with a 16:16, followed closely by masters runners William Martin, Joey Melanson, and William Gregory, showing that the competition doesn't get any easier as the runners get older.

Other notable achievements include men age group winners Jack Henny (age 61) in 20:42, Orville Kremmer (age 65) in 21:37, and Ed Williams (age 70) in 23:55. Outstanding women age group winners include Ann Ferguson (Age 55) in 24:00, Sally Reed (Age 62) in 27:54, and Marie Williams (Age 72) in 29:50. Jacque Phelps posted an age group third place in her first competitive 5K at age 70. Long-time Kick-Off Run volunteer Sandy Peck nabbed a second place age group award on her first time to run.

Two new age categories were added to the 5K run this year. A record number of 581 people entered the 5K run, Kid's K run, and 3K walk events. Veteran astronaut, Nancy Currie, started each event and presented trophies and medals to all the winners. Participants and guests were provided with a wide range of refreshments after the exercise.

The Summer Kick-Off Run is held in memory of James Glenn, a Clear Creek High School student and athlete who died while attending and playing football at Texas A&M in 1991. Benefits from the Summer Kick-Off Run are used to provide student scholarships through the James Glenn Memorial Fund. This year a $1000 scholarship was awarded to Tim Borths, recipient of Clear Creek High School's highest honor, the Weber Award.

Run sponsors are Star Toyota, St. John Sports Medicine Center, Frost Bank, Landry Chiropractic, Esteban's Cafe and Cantina, J. Derek Tieken DDS, Hall's Insurance, Safari Animal Care Centers, SR Signs, and Sam and Susan Juliano.
