Summer Kick-Off Fun Run 2000 Summary

The Bay Area's summer running season was begun with The Ninth Annual Summer Kick-Off Fun Run held at Clear Creek High School in League City on June 3, 2000. The overall men's winner was Rudy Rocha who made it look easy with a winning time of 15:50. Mr. Rocha was also last year's overall winner and he was the Houston Area Road Runners Association runner of the year winning 7 of the 9 running series events. Next on Rocha's running calendar is the VP 10K in St. Louis. When not running he teaches at a charter school in Houston. Second and third place overall were Jeffery (16:26) and Greg Lewis (16:53) who have been Kick-Off Run winners in the past.

Scott Boyd has run the Kick-Off run four times before he secured a victory in the master's division with a time of 17:55. Mr. Boyd ran at Dickinson High School and was part of the 1976 state championship cross-country team.

Janet Nichols finished the Kick-Off Run in 22:04 to win the women's masters. Nichols, a Houstonian, has only been running 3 years. This was her first Summer Kick-Off Run.

The boy's Kid's K run was won by Quinn Baker who edged Nicolas Meza by five seconds. The girl's winner was Raina Koller followed by Lenora Muhm.

The record number of 609 who entered the 5K run, Kid's K run and the 3K walk enjoyed race day festivities that included a wide range of refreshments and live music by Juan Manuel. The trophies and medals were presented by celebrity race starter Tom Richards who attended Clear Creek High School and can be heard on Houston's classical radio station KRTS, FM 92.1. A special presentation was made honoring former race volunteer Lt. Clayton Jack Kennedy who was killed in the Marine Osprey crash in April 8 of this year.

The Summer Kick-Off Run is held in memory of James Glenn, a Clear Creek High School student and athlete who died while attending and playing football at Texas A&M in 1991. Benefits from the Summer Kick-Off Run are used to provide student scholarships through the James Glenn Foundation. This year's scholarship winners are A&M bound Charisse Ayuste and James Loynes who ran in the first Kick-Off Run 9 years ago.
