Summer Kick-Off Fun Run 2001 Summary

The Summer Kick-Off Fun Run celebrated 10 years running with festive helium-filled balloons and live music by Juan Manuel at Clear Creek High School in League City Saturday, June 2, 2001.

The overall 5K winner was Bryan Williams of Dayton, Texas who returned to the Summer Kick-Off Fun Run to begin his training for the track season at McNeese State University where he is a junior.  He led a competitive field with a time of 15:52.  Second and third place overall were taken by John Reich (15:54) and defending champion Rudy Rocha, Jr. (15:58).

Perhaps a little out of her element, the overall women's winner was Elisabet Boersheim at 20:43.  She is a cross-country skier from Norway working at UTMB.  From a little closer to home, League City native Lisa Armstrong was second with a time of 20:56.

The master's division (over 40) was won by life-long runner, 54 year old Robert Wolfe coming in at 18:32.  Wolfe was joined by his wife in her first race and his son who is a member of the Clear Creek baseball team.  Barbara Rowe was the master's woman winner at 23:10.  She was defending her 1999 master's title at the Summer Kick-Off Fun Run.

Sam Brown in his second year as a run participant fulfilled his goal of winning the Kid's K run.  He was followed closely by Zach McLamore of Waxahachie, Texas making his first appearance at the Summer-Off Fun Run.  The Kid’s K girls winner was Samantha Groff followed by long-time Summer Kick-Off Run winner Lenora Muhm.

A record number of runners and walkers were on hand to enjoy great refreshments.  Legendary Bay Area runner, Louis Ciaccio, presented the trophies and medals to the winners at the post-race party held in the school patio area.  A shirt from the first Kick-Off run that Captain Frank Culbertson, Jr. wore in space was on display for the first time.
