Summer Kick-Off Fun Run 1993 Summary
The Second Annual Summer Kick-Off Fun Run was held at Clear
Creek High School in League City on June 5, 1993. The 5K winners
bear striking resemblances to last year's winners. In fact, the
overall male winner, Greg Lewis, is the twin brother of last year's
winner, Jeff Lewis. And Sande Lambert, the overall female winner
is a graduate of Clear Lake High School and Texas A&M
University as was last year's winner, Susan Brown.
Greg Lewis and Bill Gregory ran neck and neck for the entire 5000
meters with Lewis holding off a final surge to edge Gregory. Both
runners were clocked at 16:22. Lewis is a graduate of Clear Creek
High School and is now attending San Jacinto Junior College.
Sande Lambert took top women honors by finishing almost a minute
ahead of Danielle Schaeffer in 19:58. Lambert, a PE teacher at
Seabrook Intermediate School, credits her training as a Masters
Heptathalon champion for providing the conditioning necessary to win
the run.
Over 450 participants entered the Summer Kick-Off Run this year. The
field included 195 5K run finishers, 32 1K run finishers for children
12 and under, and a large, enthusiastic group of 3K walkers. The
participants were rewarded with a wide range of refreshments after the
exercise.
Benefits from the Summer Kick-Off Run will be used to provide student
scholarships through the James Glenn Memorial Fund. This year,
$1000 scholarships were awarded to Julian Valencia, Bruce George,
and Nick Churchill. Run sponsors were St. John Sports Medicine
Clinic, Harrisburg Bank, McRae's Photography, Subway Sandwiches,
Landry Chiropractic, Esteban's Cafe and Cantina, GTE, Hall's
Insurance, and Sam and Susan Juliano.
