The Third Annual Summer Kick-Off Fun Run was held at Clear Creek High School in League City on June 4, 1994. This was not the first taste of victory for the winners. Jeff Lewis, a Rice University junior and Clear Creek High School graduate won the 5K in a blistering 15:59. Jeff won the first Kick-Off run in 1992 and his brother Greg won last year. Though not providing the photo finish of last year, William Gregory provided plenty of excitement keeping the outcome in doubt until the last seconds and finishing in 16:04.
Sande Lambert, well-known area athlete, and winner of last year's run led the women with 19:36, bettering her last year's time by over 20 seconds. Sande is a graduate of Clear Lake High School and Texas A&M. Susan Brown, winner of the first run in 1992, came in second with a time of 21:32.
Over 400 participants entered the Summer Kick-Off Run this year. The field included 223 5K run finishers, 18 1K run finishers for children 12 and under, and a large, enthusiastic group of 3K walkers. The participants were provided with a wide range of refreshments after the exercise.
The Summer Kick-Off Run is in memory of James Glenn, a Clear Creek High School student and athlete who died while attending and playing football at Texas A&M. The highlight of the award ceremony was when Frank Culbertson presented James Glenn's family with a shirt from the first run which he wore on his STS-51 Shuttle mission last September.
Benefits from the Summer Kick-Off Run will be used to provide student scholarships through the James Glenn Memorial Fund. This year, a $1000 scholarship was awarded to Kyle Fitzgerald, outstanding Clear Creek High School scholar and athlete.
Run sponsors are St. John Sports Medicine Clinic, Harrisburg Bank, Landry Chiropractic, Esteban's Cafe and Cantina, GTE, Hall's Insurance, Star Toyota, Safari Animal Care Centers, and Sam and Susan Juliano.
