Summer Kick-Off Fun Run 1999 Summary

The Eighth Annual Summer Kick-Off Fun Run was held at Clear Creek High School in League City on June 5, 1999, where the Bay Area’s summer running season was kicked off with a blazing 5 kilometer run by Rudy Rocha. He didn’t run his personal best, but the Cuero native now running out of Baytown set a course record of 15:43. Mr. Rocha, a teacher, is training for Grandma’s marathon in Minnesota on his trail to the Olympic trials in Pittsburg.

Nancy Thonen, the overall women’s winner at 20:12, has only been running for 8 years. She has been very successful in those years as she adds the Summer Kick-Off run to her list of victories that include the Blue Bell 10K and other events running on the BP Amoco athletic team.

Paul Falgout was the men’s masters winner finishing at 18:09 in his fifth Kick-Off run. This was his first victory as a master’s competitor, a new division for this life-long runner. Coming down from Spring, Barbara Rowe nabbed the women’s masters title with a 22:02 in her first Kick-Off run.

Other notable achievements include a phenomenal 22:40 finish by 62 year old Joyce Gaskin. The Williams twins, Bryan and Ryan from Dayton came in second and fourth overall with 16:41 and 17:03 times, respectively. Olan Langham, the dean of Bay Area running at age 83, added another age group gold medal to his award case finishing in 52:54.

In the 1 K Kid’s race (actual distance .42 miles), James Andrew Jones edged Ryan Baker at the finish to capture the boy’s gold. Kristi Owens finished one second in front of Lauren Novak to win top girl’s honors.

A record number of 583 people entered the 5K run, Kid’s K run, and 3K walk events. Thom Marshall, Houston Chronicle columnist, started each event and presented trophies and medals to all the winners. Participants and guests were provided with a wide range of refreshments after the exercise.

The Summer Kick-Off Run is held in memory of James Glenn, a Clear Creek High School student and athlete who died while attending and playing football at Texas A&M in 1991. Benefits from the Summer Kick-Off Run are used to provide student scholarships through the James Glenn Foundation. This year $1000 scholarships were awarded to Clear Creek High School graduates Jessica Carroll who will be attending Tulane University and playing basketball there and to Raymond Stoney who will be majoring in pre-med at Duke University next year.
